One Skate at a Time

On April 14, 2012, I photographed “One Skate at a Time” at the Southwest Ice Arena in Crestwood, IL. The show was organized by Jordan Moeller, a junior-level skater from Oak Lawn, IL, and the proceeds from the show benefitted One Step at a Time, a camp for kids with cancer. They raised over $6500 for the camp’s year-round programming, and they put on a great show in the process.

I enjoyed seeing this batch of local Chicago skaters, and I am hoping to photograph them more often in the future.

On a personal note, the show took place in the arena where I learned how to skate. Although it’s close to my parents’ house and just down the street from the church that I attended for most of my life, I don’t think I had been inside Southwest Ice Arena since I was four years old. I think the washrooms have been spruced up since then, but the main lobby still seemed familiar to me. My skating career didn’t survive past an 8-week tots class, so I stayed off the ice this time. I’m much more comfortable standing next to the boards with a camera in my hand!

Head over to my Facebook page to see all of the skaters.
